Black Mirror: screens, choices, and bad exits

A series about more than a machine of the week

Black Mirror, created by Charlie Brooker, works best when its technology is close enough to ordinary life to feel embarrassing. A screen records too much. A service makes grief convenient. A rating system turns every greeting into work. The show takes a familiar desire, then follows the social bargain until it becomes cruel.

Because it is an anthology, the unevenness is part of the experience. Some episodes are blunt, some are tender, some are nasty for sport, and a few leave the technology almost in the background. Viewers can choose an episode by mood. The series does not demand one fixed lesson about the future.

A route through the episodes

For social pressure: "Nosedive"

A bright, anxious story about public ratings and forced cheerfulness. Its surface is clean; its social life is exhausting.

For grief: "Be Right Back"

A quiet episode about loss and a digital substitute that knows too much and too little at the same time.

For games and identity: "USS Callister"

Retro space adventure becomes a study of resentment, simulation, and control.

For a softer entry: "San Junipero"

A love story that uses a simulated afterlife to ask whether continuity can be chosen with care.

For media self-parody: "Joan Is Awful"

A streaming-service nightmare with enough comedy to show the series mocking its own appetite for algorithmic misery.

For a hard stop: "White Bear"

Intense, punitive, and deliberately uncomfortable. Watch when you want an episode that pushes public punishment past comfort.

What keeps returning

Memory becomes evidence when everything can be replayed. Work appears in ratings, content, care, and identity, all turned into measurable performance. Consent is another fault line. Many episodes ask who gets to duplicate, edit, observe, punish, or monetize a version of a person.

The series is strongest when it starts with a small compromise. People only need a tool that seems useful before its cost becomes visible.

Companion works

For adjacent viewing, try The Twilight Zone for the older anthology tradition, Years and Years for a continuous near-future family drama, Severance for workplace identity, Her for a gentler intimacy with software, and Ex Machina for a smaller chamber piece about projection and control.

On a rewatch, ask what an episode makes people do to one another once its gadget is normal. That is usually where the real discomfort begins.

Charlie Brooker

All seven seasons, plus the detours

The episode guide above is for a first visit. This longer map follows the show from its British beginning to its recent return to stranger, less purely technological stories. Each season changes the texture of the anthology, so it is worth treating them as distinct phases rather than a single uninterrupted warning.

Season 1, 2011

Three compact provocations: public humiliation in The National Anthem, memory as marital evidence in The Entire History of You, and animated spectacle in Fifteen Million Merits. It is abrasive, low-budget in the useful sense, and unusually close to tabloid culture.

Season 2, 2013

The series becomes more intimate without becoming kinder. Be Right Back gives grief a service plan, White Bear turns justice into an attraction, and The Waldo Moment notices how easily contempt can dress itself as entertainment.

Season 3, 2016

The Netflix expansion makes the palette larger and the range wider. Start with Nosedive, San Junipero, Playtest, or Shut Up and Dance. These episodes move between social performance, memory, fear, and coercion without settling into one tone.

Season 4, 2017

A polished, varied set that includes USS Callister, Arkangel, Crocodile, Hang the DJ, Metalhead, and Black Museum. It is often concerned with custody, surveillance, copied consciousness, and the stories people tell to excuse control.

Season 5, 2019

Only three episodes, but each tests a different contemporary pressure point: virtual intimacy in Striking Vipers, celebrity exposure in Smithereens, and a pop-star brand trapped inside Rachel, Jack and Ashley Too. The smaller season reads like a set of close-ups.

Season 6, 2023

This return loosens the show from its usual gadget-first formula. Joan Is Awful attacks platform ownership, while Loch Henry, Mazey Day, Beyond the Sea, and Demon 79 borrow from true crime, celebrity horror, period drama, and folk devilry.

Season 7, 2025

The newest run looks backward as well as forward. Common People makes healthcare into a subscription trap; Bete Noire weaponizes shared reality; Hotel Reverie considers performance and memory; and USS Callister: Into Infinity gives the anthology a rare direct sequel.

Special: White Christmas, 2014

Three stories nested around a winter confession. Digital blocking, workplace voyeurism, and copied selves converge into one of the show's clearest demonstrations of how an administrative convenience can become a private hell.

Interactive special: Bandersnatch, 2018

This branching film turns choice into both interface and subject. Its paths are part game, part prank, part anxiety machine, asking whether agency feels different once every alternative is prewritten and measured.

How to use this map

There is no required order. Watch by premise, then leave room between the harsher episodes. The rewarding comparison is often between two different eras: The Entire History of You beside Beyond the Sea, or White Bear beside Loch Henry. The technology changes; the question of who gets watched, believed, or punished does not.
