Junji Ito and His Horror Manga
Junji Ito is a horror artist whose pages remain disturbing after the surprise has passed. The first shock often comes from the image itself, but what stays is structure: repetition, obsession, bodily drift, small-town stillness, a joke held one beat too long, and an ordinary world that carries on under impossible conditions. His monsters matter because the people and places around them learn to live with the unlivable.
Born in Gifu in 1963, Ito grew up reading horror manga and later worked as a dental technician before moving into professional comics. That technical background mattered: his line work is clean, anatomical, patient, and often cruelly exact. Over time he built a body of work spanning body horror, cosmic horror, grotesque comedy, psychological dread, and apocalyptic fantasy, with Tomie, Uzumaki, Gyo, and Remina standing as four especially useful entry points.
